Norton Commander (NC) is a discontinued prototypical orthodox file manager (OFM), written by John Socha and released by Peter Norton Computing (later acquired in 1990 by the Symantec corporation). NC provides a text-based user interface for managing files on top of MS-DOS.It was officially produced between 1986 and 1998. The last MS-DOS version of Norton Commander, 5.51, was released on July 1. A cross-platform file manager. It features a Norton Commander style interface and runs on any OS supporting the Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition.

Eltima Software has debuted a new free file manager for Mac OS X, Commander One, which is the developer’s first app created entirely in Swift.

Apart from basic navigation like copying, moving and deleting files, Commander One enables you to drag & drop files from one location to another. You can preview any of your files, including binary and hex, without opening them. The app allows you to search your Mac’s content, queue file operations and setup a combination of hotkeys for any of your actions. It comes with a terminal emulator.

Commander One’s drag and drop dual-pane interface will appeal to users who are familiar with such old-school apps as Xtree, and Norton Commander from the DOS and Windows 95 days. While it’s easy enough to drag and drop amongst folders and drives in OS X, we found Commander One to be a convenient interface, making it easy to copy and move files at will.

Commander One also includes a FTP and SFTP client, and allows linking to Dropbox accounts for easy file transfers to and from your cloud storage account with that service. The company also says users can mount their iOS and Android devices to easily access content on those devices.

While Commander One is free, there is a $29.95 PRO pack that offers extended features, such as RAR support, mounting iOS devices, terminal emulator, process manager, FTP manager, themes, and more. The PRO features are free for a 15 day trial period.
